ENG 200 - Introduction to the Short Story (Fiction Writing)

Content: Summer session is the perfect time to do an enjoyable, deep study of the art of short fiction. In this class we’ll focus on how to read like writers – and write short works of our own. Curious about the process of writing? Thinking you might want to take an course in this exciting – and inventive – discipline? This is a great opportunity. We’ll read stories from a variety of cutting-edge, 20th century American writers – writers such as Dennis Johnson, Ann Beattie, Michael Cunningham, and Flannery O’Connor.      

Perform bravura feats of editing! Initiate inventive problem solving and thoughtful critique! Bring your curiosity and your appetite for the transformative! 
This course satisfies the College’s creative arts requirement. 

Generic Catalog Description for ENG 200: Elements of fiction such as plot, character development, descriptive language, and voice. Emphasis on craft-based exercise. Extensive reading of short stories, culminating in the writing and revision of a final story.

Prerequisite: None.

Semester Credits: 4

 

About the instructor: Peyton Marshall is a graduate of the University of Iowa’s famous Creative Writing Workshop. Her work has appeared nationally, and internationally, in journals such as Tin House, Etiqueta Negra, A Public Space, and Blackbird. Her stories have been anthologized in the Best New American Voices.
