75 New Students Attend Great Expectations

A record number of participants attended this year’s Great Expectations retreat.

Great Expectations (GE) is a pre-orientation retreat aimed at ensuring students transition to LC with great success both academically and socially. GE was started three years ago out of recognizing that certain students were being lost along the way because they were not prepared academically, connected to the institution or to their peers–something that research clearly shows increases a student’s chance of success and retention.

This year a record number of participants were in attendance at Great Expectations. 75 new students and 15 student mentors, along with staff members came together and learned about expectations for E&D, planning ahead with advising strategies, learning styles and study tools, how to write a college paper, what to expect while living on campus, how to get involved on and off of campus, as well as simply bonding with new friends and mentors.

Students stated that GE was a great opportunity where they now feel prepared for their college career and transitioning from high school to life on the Hill. Students have walked away from GE with a greater sense of connection to LC as well as confidence in their abilities to be successful during their time here. Staff involved are thrilled at the level of participation, energy and commitment to LC that the Class of 2015 GE participants displayed.

Great Expectations is a collaborative effort from the following campus offices: Advising, ASLC, Athletics, Bon Appetit, Campus Living, Campus Safety, Career and Community Engagement (3CE), Dean of Students, Housing and Orientation, International Students and Scholars, Multicultural Affairs, Provost, Student Activities, Student Transitions and Experiences (STE), Student Support Services, and the Writing Center.
