Future Giving

For Maggie Riggs Allee R.N., JD ’93 the future is always present, something she thinks about and shapes every day.

For Maggie Riggs Allee R.N., JD ’93 the future is always present, something she thinks about and shapes every day.

That’s true whether she’s teaching ethics at Marylhurst University; directing patient safety and quality care programs for Providence Health and Services; or discussing end-of-life decisions with patients, families, physicians, and caregivers.

Such work, touching the lives of others so directly, requires thoughtful analysis and objectivity. The skills she learned at Lewis & Clark Law School become especially valuable. “I may approach issues differently from some of my health care colleagues because law school taught me to step back and think critically,” she says. “For example, I understand the clinical nuances, legal aspects, and ethical dimensions of withdrawing life support. I’m able to support families in their decision making and understand the emotions they are experiencing.”

Reflecting on why she has designated Lewis & Clark Law School as a beneficiary in her will, she says, “I believe the faculty helped me develop and enhance the skills that have been essential to the work I’m doing. I want to provide something that will benefit other students. It’s the right thing to do.”
