Julia Duin '78\, always wanted to be a journalist and spent several decades as a writer a nd editor for several newspapers. Her strangest assignment was to write a n article on serpent-handling Pentecostals in West Virginia. The story tu rned into a piece for the Washington Post\, and then the Wal l Street Journal. She wrote more articles and spent two years resear ching people who handle snakes during worship\, based on an obscure readi ng of Mark 16:17-18 in the New Testament of the Bible.
Duin has w ritten a book\, due in the fall\, on why people hold these beliefs. She w ill share her research as to what makes these folks tick and why these ha ndlers are willing to die for their faith.

We are pleased that David Fenner '75 has agreed to speak about Human Migration\, discussing the roots and the routes of human mig ration from our beginnings in Africa\, into the 21st century\, and the na tural and man-made forces that contribute: drought\, floods\, crop failur e\, war\, the quest for survival\, or the hope of a better future. The ta lk will take us into our current situation to help us understand more ful ly events in the headlines. An accomplished scholar and expert in the fie ld of the middle east\, David is willing to entertain questions following the presentation on the Syrian refugee crisis\, the travel ban countries and the roots of extremism in the Middle East.
David Fenner grad uated from Lewis and Clark in 1975\, and then spent years traveling and s tudying. In 2007 he retired from the University of Washington as the Assi stant Vice Provost for International Education.
