SUMMARY:Fundraising Silent Auction & Concert for Shree Mangal Dvip Sc
hool in Nepal
DESCRIPTION:The Pamplin Society of Fellows at Lewis &\; Clark College
is hosting a fundraiser for Shree Mangal Dvip in Nepal (http://himalayanc
hildren.org/home/index.html)\, a school for Himalayan and Tibetan refugee
children. The event will include a silent auction\, presentation\, and p
erformances by the Section Line Drive\, an a cappella group from Lewis &a
mp\; Clark\, along with other local combos and performers. The school's
director\, Shirley Blair\, will be giving a talk on the history of SMD\,
describe the current educational environment\, as well as discuss their p
lans for the future. The event will be held in Smith Hall and Albany on t
he Lewis &\; Clark campus on Friday\, February 17th\, at 7p.m. and is
free and open to the public. Shree Mangal Dvip Boarding School (SMD) was
established in 1987 by the Tibetan teacher\, Thrangu Rinpoche and curren
tly houses and educates over 600 students. Its aim is to nurture the cult
ure\, language and Buddhist way of the Himalayas\, and to give Himalayan
children the tools to build a better future and help their own people bac
k home. These children come from remote areas in the Himalayan Mountains
where they must sometimes walk a week to get to the nearest road to come
to the school. The villages often do not have access to medical care\, e
lectricity\, education\, sanitation\, or roads. The children who come to
the school are clothed and fed and given an education in English and Nepa
lese. The best students go on to high schools and colleges both in Nepal
and abroad. Currently SMD has a school complex in Kathmandu\, Nepal\, wh
ich is overcrowded. They are therefore raising funds to build a new susta
inable facility outside the city\, which will house more students\, be ea
rthquake-proof\, and have gardens. Lewis &\; Clark College is located
at 0615 SW Palatine Hill Road. Parking is free on campus after 7pm. For
more information\, call 503-768-7960. Now in its 16th \;academic yea
r\, Pamplin Society's membership includes 20 current students and more th
an 100 alumni. Membership is extended to seven students each year as they
begin their second year at the college\; the students embody the charact
eristics outlined by Dr. Pamplin: an exceptional blend of intellectual ta
lent\, the habit of physical fitness\, personal integrity\, and the willi
ngness to shoulder the burdens of leadership. \;

SUMMARY:Anti-‐Intellectualism and the Academy in American Life
DESCRIPTION:What is college good for\, anyway? \; One hears this ques
tion echoing through the halls of Congress and the halls of academe.
\; The question often takes on an anti-intellectual tone\, implying that
education is irrelevant\, extravagant and hostile to the public good.
0\; Yet the question itself\, stripped of these rhetorical purposes\, is
a worthy question:what good ought to be pursued by higher education?
\; In this talk\, Copenhaver argues that answering this question requires
\, in the first instance\, revising it. \; We ought to be asking:
