On a drunken night out with his friends \, a broken-hearted young man is swayed into going to the countryside wit h them for a getaway. But when he gets there\, he finds that not only hav e none of them showed up\, but the tiny seaside town is shuttered - no sh ops are open\, no tourists are around\, the beach is freezing\, and there 's no cell phone signal. Unable (and reluctant) to return to \;the 60\;Seoul\, he finds himself in the company of some very unusual locals a nd\, subject to the rigid rules of Korean drinking culture\, on an increa singly strange odyssey nursing a never-ending hangover.

Join the Lewis &\; Clark Bookst ore on November 11\, 2014 to celebrate the latest book from new faculty m ember\, Elizabeth Bennett\, Assistant Professor of International Affairs. Bennett will speak about her book\, with an opportunity for questions an d dialogue.
\;
The Civic Imagination (Para digm Press) documents a "collective ethnographic study of civic culture\, " following "a year in the lives of activists striving to make their city a better place." With a style and methodology that is relatable to a ran ge of readers\, Bennett and her co-authors explore "complex relations bet ween citizens and their democracy\, skepticism and engagement\, and inequ ality and activism." As a result of their work\, where they expected to f ind a sense of cynicism and political disengagement\, Bennett and her tea m instead found individuals with a far more nuanced relationship to the p olitical system.
What does it mean to these "tremendous ly hopeful citizens" to make a difference in political life? How do these activists approach American politics? What must be their focus\, and\, c onversely\, what must be ignored?
…Intrigued? Join us to learn more!

\, University of Minnesota professor\,

y
Introduced by Claire Hinkley\, L&\;C '15
Presentation abstract: This talk offers a feminist analysis of consumption and consumer politics. \; Taking so cialist-feminist theorizations and contemporary food politics as points o f departure\, I ask what the possibilities are for a politics of consumpt ion in the present day. \;How does the category of labor reframe the history of malls and supermarkets and what happens in those spaces?  \; How do struggles for gender and sexual freedoms intersect with struggl es over consumption and the economy? How might we view consumption as a s ite of instability and structure? \;Power and poss ibility? In these complicated times\, how can a feminist reading of shopp ing be helpful?

Presentation Ab stract: \; If capital\, as Karl Marx has argued\, "lives only by suck ing living labor\," what formations of value are reproduced through death ? Or\, how might disability studies\, critiques of racial capitalism\, an d queer theory help us argue that dead labor\, or necrocapital\, is centr al to the extraction of surplus value? \; Reading with an HIV-reagent bank run by the National Institutes of Health and ACT UP's 1992 "Ashes A ction\," this talk tracks the massive wealth accumulated by global pharma ceutical companies and the structured abandonment of its viral laborers. It is in this interdiction of the money form and the biopolitical that th e question of whom and what constitutes the human\, and who is ground int o dust\, appears.

Student Activities is proud to present
the premiere of SARA'S COLUMBINE a film by Justin Zimmerman.
<
/p>
SARA'S COLUMBINE is a documentary that focuses on one woman's exp
erience with the horrific 1999 school shooting\, and how this historic en
counter changed her during three distinct periods of her life. After she
survived the massacre\, Sara was featured on a multitude of media outlets
\, culminating in a Montel Williams Show 'special' just two days after th
e event. This footage\, along with personal interviews conducted in 2005
and 2014 and hundreds of scanned photos\, makes up SARA'S COLUMBINE\, a p
owerful and inspirational personal journey.
In April of 2015
\, John LaDue\, 17\, was arrested before he could carry out an attack on
his Minnesota school. He idealized the Columbine shooters and said April
was his favorite month. In June\, at Reynolds High School here in Oregon\
, a boy killed another boy\, shot a teacher and then killed himself. I wa
s in my home office\, working on a section of Sara's most recent intervie
w\, when the news popped up in my feed. I've been a professor at four col
leges\, I've worked in countless after-school programs and I was a casewo
rker for Big Brothers / Big Sisters for years. This is an important topic
for me\, personally. And that's why I'm glad I met Sara. Sara was the fa
ce of Columbine's students for many media outlets. The shootings indelibl
y marked her for life. And yet she is one of the most resilient\, thought
ful and warm individuals I've ever met. I wanted to make a film that brin
gs Sara's story to audiences across the country because her story is abou
t healing. And that's a story we never hear.
Justin Zimmerma
n is a nationally recognized writer\, filmmaker and professor. His narrat

and has been broadcast on national public television\, where he won two i
nternational television awards. He's also been the recipient of multiple

on several occasions.

Black Lives Matter is arg uably one of the most significant social movements of our day. The Ethnic Studies program is sponsoring a series this year to discuss various aspe cts of this movement. Over the course of the year\, we will hold four pan el discussions that bring together academics\, activists and students to examine the BLM movement from the perspectives of politics\, history\, ed ucation and philosophy.
For the first panel\, we ask what kind of political movement is BLM. What is the relationship of BLM to electoral politics\, if any? Given the heterogeneous \;nature of BLM\, is it ev en possible to define concrete political goals and \;strategies? How important is identity politics to the BLM? How does intersectionality (ho w race\, class and gender work together) function in the \;BLM moveme nt?

About Octavia's Brood:
Whe never we envision a world without war\, without prisons\, without injusti ce\, we are engaging in speculative fiction. Radicals and activists devot e their lives to envisioning such worlds\, and then go about trying to cr eate them. What better vehicle for them to explore their work and its pos sibilities than through writing original science fiction stories?
Walidah Imarisha and adrienne maree brown brought together 20 radical writers to do just that. The result is Octavia's Brood: Science Fiction Stories from Social Justice Movements\, an engaging and enlighten ing collection that uncovers truths buried in the fantastic\, and injects a healthy dose of imagination and innovation into our search for truth. It is the first book to explore the connections between radical science f iction and movements for social change\, using visionary prose to weave s trands of real-life experience—inequality and exploitation\, struggle a nd solidarity—to generate innovative ways of understanding the world ar ound us\, paint visions of new worlds that could be\, and teach us new wa ys of interacting with one another. This is visionary fiction to engage o ur imaginations and guide our hands in struggle.

In 2008 th e global economy was on the brink of collapse\, due in part to greed and hubris but also to a little known mathematical formula called the Li Gaus sian Copula. While scholars have carefully examined the human actions tha t lead to the collapse\, research has largely neglected the mathematics u pon which the edifice was built. As a result\, scholars have analyzed the collapse in terms of human greed\, avarice\, and hubris but largely igno red the mathematical tools that enabled sub-prime mortgages to infiltrate the global financial system. I examine the Li Gaussian Copula to reveal how mathematical discourse can transform economic problems and\, on occas ion\, render economic systems more rather than less fragile in the proces s.

IT HAPPENED HERE< /strong>\, a compelling new documentary from director Lisa F. Jackson and producer Marjorie Schwartz Nielsen\, explores sexual assault on campuses through the personal testimonials of five survivors who transform their experiences into a springboard for change.
In raw and intimate in terviews\, the students describe surviving sexual assault only to be met with apathy\, disbelief\, blame and retaliation from the authorities when they tried to report the crime. When they tried to get justice\, they we re ignored\, belittled and shamed\, while their attackers remained on cam pus with impunity. But instead of hiding away in shame\, they chose to sp eak out\, and found a way to force institutional change.
