That n umber has since grown. Refugee camps in places like Pakistan\, Jordan\, L ebanon\, Kenya\, and Thailand contain millions of occupants. This exclude s the millions of additional migrants leaving behind poverty and economic despair. Controlling migration\, stopping it altogether\, and assimilati ng those allowed in have become controversial issues in the domestic poli tics of countries like the United States and Australia. In Europe migrati on from Syria and North Africa has created a policy crisis that is testin g the European Union. Every day\, it seems\, migration is in the news.
Please join the history faculty for a panel \;discussion that w ill place current patterns of migration into a larger historical context. \; We will examine how present-day migration and the political and s ocial reactions compare to earlier examples and what we can learn from th em. \; Questions from the audience are welcome.

The 8th annual NW Returnee Conference (
NWRC) will be held on Feb. 20 (Sat)\, 2016\, at Concordia University\, Po
rtland\, OR.
https://nwrc.studioabroad.com
The NWRC
conference strives to cultivate and support the growth of global citizen
ship by encouraging returnees to reflect upon and understand their recent
ly acquired international experience. The conference provides re-entry su
pport\, networking opportunities\, skill building workshops\, and profess
ional development training.
It is our goal that through par
ticipation in this conference\, returnees learn to identify and articulat
e gained skills that enrich and foster their future careers\, educational
endeavors\, and community involvement.
The Dinah Dodds Endowment for Internati onal Studies provides grants to students to allow them to extend their ov erseas experience in order to expand on work begun on their Lewis &\; Clark program. The fund also provides faculty grants to enhance specific programs—for example\, by covering unbudgeted equipment or technology\, seminars\, and other educational resources.
The endowment was recently established by Missy Vaux Hall in honor of Dinah Dodds\, pr ofessor emerita \;of German. "Through the years\, I've been struck by the depth of Dinah's engagement at Lewis &\; Clark and by her dedicat ion to her students\," says Hall\, a longtime friend of Dodds. "This endo wment honors Dinah's commitment and carries forward her legacy in interna tional education." Hall spent a year overseas when she was in college and understands the impact that such an experience can have on a student's l ife. "I'm very committed to international education as a way to foster mu tual problem solving and collaboration in this world\," she says. "If any thing\, it's going to be more and more critical for people to have that e xperience\, and I'm happy that this endowment will support that."
If you are interested in applying\, please contact Larry Meyers at < a href="mailto:meyersl@lclark.edu" target="_blank">meyersl@lclark.edu for more information. Applications are due by March 11\, 2016. strong> For a list of past projects and participants\, please visit our w ebsite here.
