Audio and Architecture: Unfolding Sound with SpaceMap, A Layout-Agnostic Multi-Channel Sound Diffusion Algorithm

Speaker:  Steve Ellison, Applications Director, Digital Products for Meyer Sound Labs of Berkeley

Ellison’s talk will focus on a technique for sound panning he developed that has been embraced by Repertory and Broadway theaters, Spectacle Productions such as Cirque du Soleil and Dragone, and musicians including John Williams and Herbie Hancock. What are the challenges that sound designers and composers face when realizing multi-channel works in the real world, with the constraints of physical architecture, and how can they be overcome?  How did he stumble upon the Barycentric coordinate system and apply this to sound design and does this remind you of any topics you have covered in Topology?  L&C professor Liz Stanhope will interject witty mathy insights.
