Over the summer, the Dean’s office generously provided funding for Lily Waldman and Anya Walker to collaborate on a research project with Professor Dawn Odell covering the period of Dutch colonialism in Indonesia. Lily and Anya took their research in two different directions, both with a focus on architecture as it relates to issues of identity. Anya looked into adaptations and identity of the Dutch colonizers in Batavia, while Lily investigated issues surrounding Chinese identity and culture in Indonesia. This project gave Lily the opportunity to travel to Indonesia to visit historical buildings and conduct interviews, in an attempt to broaden her research and come closer to answering questions about her own experiences with identity growing up in Indonesia.
