Professional Biography

Matthieu Raillard joined the faculty at Lewis & Clark in 2004, after completing a Ph.D. at the University of Virginia. He specializes in Peninsular Literature of the 18th and 19th Centuries. His research focuses mainly on the relationship between rhetorical authority and the birth of professional authorship in the Spanish 18th century.  Prof. Raillard has also published essays on the erotic literature of the Spanish enlightenment, the aesthetic theory of the sublime in Spanish Romanticism, the Spanish Republic of Letters, as well as Mariano Jose de Larra’s narrative strategies,  in leading journals such as Dieciocho, Revista de estudios hispanicos, Decimononica and Studies in Eighteenth Century Culture, as well as collaborations on the Cambridge History of Spanish Literature and Diccionario de criticos literarios del Siglo XIX. He is currently working on a book-length manuscript on theories of narrative authority in the Spanish Enlightenment. His teaching experience covers all levels of language and literature instruction, as well as directing undergraduate independent study courses and Honors Theses.
