Martin Hart-Landsberg

Professional Biography

Martin Hart-Landsberg is Professor of Economics and Director of the Political Economy Program at Lewis and Clark College, Portland, Oregon; and Adjunct Researcher at the Institute for Social Sciences, Gyeongsang National University, South Korea. His areas of teaching and research include political economy, economic development, international economics, and the political economy of East Asia.

His forthcoming book is Capitalist Globalization: Consequences, Resistance, and Alternatives, Monthly Review Press, 2013.  Previous books include Marxist Perspectives on South Korea in the Global Economy (co-edited with Seongjin Jeong and Richard Westra), Ashgate Publishing, 2007; China and Socialism: Market Reforms and Class Struggle (with Paul Burkett), Monthly Review Press, 2005 (reprinted in Hindi, Korean, Mandarin, Spanish, Turkish, and Norwegian); Development, Crisis, and Class Struggle: Learning From Japan and East Asia (with Paul Burkett), St. Martin’s Press, 2000; and Korea: Division, Reunification, and U.S. Foreign Policy, Monthly Review Press, 1998 (reprinted in Korean).  He has also published articles on issues related to globalization and third world development in journals such as Monthly Review, Critical Asian Studies, Journal of Contemporary Asia, Review of Radical Political Economics, Against the Current, and Historical Materialism.

He is an editor of Critical Asian Studies, a member of the steering committee of the Alliance of Scholars Concerned About Korea, and has served as consultant for the Korea program of the American Friends Service Committee. He is also a member of the Workers’ Rights Board (Portland, Oregon).
