Professional Biography

Juan Carlos Toledano Redondo joined the faculty of Lewis and Clark College as Assistant Professor of Hispanic Studies in 2001. After completing a B.A. in Spanish Philology at the Universidad de Granada, Spain, he received his PhD. in Romance Languages at the University of Miami, FL, with a concentration on Hispanic Caribbean literature. Professor Toledano was promoted to Associate Professor in the spring of 2007. He teaches courses on the fantastic, nation building, and feminism in contemporary Latin America and Spain. He has published a dissertation and different articles on the relationship between the 1959 Cuban Revolution and the production of science fiction in the island, such as “From Socialist Realism to Anarchist-Capitalism: Cuban Cyberpunk” Science Fiction Studies (2005) and “The Many Faces of God: The Representation of Christianity in Caribbean Science Fiction.” Chasqui (2007): Currently, he is working on a book manuscript on the science fiction oeuvre of Cuban authors Agustín de Rojas and Daína Chaviano during the 1980s and 1990s, and on a collaborative project on Central American and Caribbean science fiction for Istmo.
