Professional Biography

Bruce Suttmeier joined the Lewis & Clark faculty as Assistant Professor of Japanese in 2001. He received his doctorate in Asian Languages from Stanford University with a dissertation examining war memory and trauma in the fiction of 1960s Japan. He has taught courses in Japanese language, literature, and civilization, as well as a freshmen course on travel and travel writing.  His publications include an article titled “Seeing Past Destruction: Trauma and History in Kaiko Takeshi,” (in positions: east asia cultures critique, 2007) and a book chapter on historical speculation and the case of Yokoi Shoichi, the Japanese soldier discovered on Guam in 1972. He is currently working on a book manuscript exploring literature and culture in 1960s Japan.
