Quantitative Reasoning Exam
For Incoming Students Only
This exam, taken on-line in the summer prior to your first semester, aids in determining your level of quantitative reasoning proficiency and is necessary unless exempted (see below) for all students. You will need this prerequisite for certain required general education courses.
You are EXEMPT from taking Part I of the exam and may register for any course with prerequisite CS102/MATH055 or equivalent if you meet one of these criteria:
- an SAT I Math score of 630 or higher or an ACT Math score of 30 or higher, provided the score has been recorded with the Lewis & Clark Registrar OR
- a grade of B or higher in a high school calculus course (please ask the Registrar to get your high school transcript from Admissions to validate your exemption).
If you do not meet these criteria, please take Part I of the exam.
Part II of the Quantitative Reasoning Exam serves as a placement test for MATH 131: Calculus I. You may only take Part II of the exam if you are exempt from Part I or if you have passed Part I. If you are planning to register for a mathematics course numbered 131 or above, consult the following page for advice: https://college.lclark.edu/departments/mathematical_sciences/math_placement.php
However, additional exemption criteria will be recorded with the Registrar as the information becomes available and will be applied to mid-summer and future registrations: an AP score of 4 or higher (in Calculus, Statistics or Computer Science); an IB score of 5, 6 or 7 on a standard or higher level mathematics exam; or a grade of B or higher in a high school calculus course (please ask the Registrar to get your high school transcript from Admissions to validate your exemption).
Note: You may check the Test Summary Section of WebAdvisor on the Registrar’s web page to see what scores are currently recorded.

Accommodations: If you are a student with a disability who requires accommodations, please notify the Office of Student Support Services at access@lclark.edu, or call 503-768-7156.
When to take exam: If you plan to register for a course that has a Math 055/CS 102 prerequisite during summer registration, you must complete the exam at least 48 hours prior to registration. Otherwise, you need to take the exam by August 24, if at all possible, for future registration periods. The exam is also given on campus during NSO, on August 29, for students who cannot access the online exam during the summer.
If you receive a Level I score or have yet to take the exam, you will not be able to register for a course with this prerequisite. You will have only one attempt this summer to take this exam, but you may retake it, if necessary, in October before registration for Spring term courses.
Content of Exam: The exam is based on material usually found in a standard high school curriculum, at least through intermediate algebra. Your score will indicate your level of proficiency:
Level I – Basic proficiency prerequisite is not met by Part 1 and you must take Computer Science 102, which is substituting for Review of Algebra, Math 055, for 2012-13.
Level II – Basic proficiency is met for courses with prerequisite Math 055 or equivalent, and you may register for any courses requiring CS102/MATH055 as a prerequisite. Part 2 of the exam is recommended.
Level III – Adequate preparation is determined for courses with prerequisite Math 115 or equivalent by Part 2 of the exam and you may register for any of those courses.
Academic Integrity: Consistent with Lewis & Clark’s Academic Integrity Policy, your submission of this exam for evaluation affirms that you have followed the spirit and letter of this policy by working independently.
Directions for Taking the Exam: This is a timed exam in two 60-minute parts with only Part I required. There is ample time to complete the exam. We recommend that you use Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher on Windows, Safari 3.0 or higher on Macintosh or Firefox on either to access the exam.
