HIST 298: Latin American Environmental History

This course charts the myriad interactions between humans and their environments in Latin America over the last thousand years. It also explores ways in which the physical environment—climate, natural disasters, natural resources, and diseases—influenced the course of human history. Beginning with the pre-contact indigenous societies of the Americas and ending with current battles over natural resources control and environmental justice, students will gain an understanding of the historical legacies of human relations with the natural world. The course will utilize a variety of sources that cross both geographical and temporal boundaries in Latin America in order to examine the region comparatively. Students will have the opportunity to gain a broad understanding of the region as well as the different methodologies utilized by environmental historians.
This course satisfies the International Studies General Education requirement.

HIST 398: The Scientific Revolution

Beginning with the pre-contact indigenous societies of the Americas and ending with current battles over natural resources control and environmental justice, a study of the myriad interactions between humans and their environments in Latin America over the last thousand years, including ways in which the physical environment–climate, natural disasters, natural resources, and disease–influenced the course of human history.
This course satisfies the International Studies General Education requirement.
