French 350 - Passionate Callings: French Literature and The Creative Endeavor

Description:  We will explore the foundational works of early French literature using an innovative approach to literary studies, which involves the study of great works both through careful reading and traditional academic papers, and through creative writing inspired by our readings.  Texts to be studied may include La Chanson de Roland, the Provençal troubadours, saints’ lives, the Folies Tristan, Chrétien de Troyes’s Le Chevalier de la Charrette (Lancelot), the poetry of Louise Labé, Du Bellay, and Ronsard, as well as Corneille’s Le Cid.  Particular attention will be given to the notion of callings in their various manifestations:  patriotic, spiritual, artistic, amorous.  Prerequisite: FR 321 or consent.
