Study Abroad

The Overseas Office, in cooperation with the Japanese Program, offers a number of options for studying abroad in Japan.  Our program in Sapporo is geared for those with a limited knowledge of Japanese.  Our Osaka program is for those interested AtUtsukushijima2 in a more language-focused, academically-rigorous experience.  And our Tokyo program is for those with advanced language skills, interested in studying in Tokyo for the full year.   We work to insure that students apply for the program that best matches their academic plan and goals. 

Sapporo

Prerequisite: One year of college Japanese.

Program: (Fall/Spring/Full year) Academic study focuses on language, history, and contemporary culture of Japan. This program is part of a student exchange relationship with Hokusei Gakuen University in Sapporo, the capital city of Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido.

Students live with host families.

Satisfies the overseas requirement for the Asian Studies major and the World Languages major with Japanese as a primary language. This program also satisfies the overseas study highly recommended for Japanese minors.  Select courses can be applied to the Japanese minor.

Osaka

Prerequisite: One year of college Japanese.

Program (Fall/Spring/Full year): In cooperation with Osaka Gakuin University in Osaka, Lewis & Clark College offers students intensive Japanese language study and an Asian Studies curriculum in the humanities and social sciences focusing on Japanese society and culture.  Most lecture courses are taught in English.  Some students at Osaka Gakuin can take special lecture courses, conducted in Japanese for language learners.  Osaka Gakuin also offers field placement internships for selected students.

Housing is with host families for the duration of the program. 

This program satisfies the overseas requirement for the Asian Studies major and the World Languages major with Japanese as a primary language. It also satisfies the overseas study highly recommended for Japanese minors.

Japan: Fukuoka

Prerequisite: One year of college-level Japanese.

Program (Fall/Spring/Full Year):  In cooperation with Seinan Gakuin University, Lewis & Clark offers a program of Language Intensive study in Fukuoka, Japan.  Students take Japanese language classes and have a choice of electives taught in English at the International Division of the school.

Students have the option of living on-campus in the International House, or with a homestay family in Fukuoka.

This program fulfills the overseas study requirement for the Asian Studies major, and the overseas requirement for the World Languages major with Japanese as a primary language.  Select courses can be applied to the Japanese minor. Students who complete Japanese 201 or higher fulfill the World Language proficiency general education requirement.

Tokyo

Prerequisite: Japanese 310 with a 3.000 average or better in language study is a prerequisite.

Full year only. In cooperation with Waseda University in Tokyo, Lewis & Clark College offers advanced students a full-year of Japanese language study.

This program fulfills the overseas requirement for the Asian Studies major and World Languages major (with Japanese as the primary language).  Select courses can be applied to the Japanese minor.
