Bruce Suttmeier joined the Lewis & Clark faculty in 2001. He received his doctorate in Asian Languages from Stanford University with a dissertation examining war memory and trauma in the fiction of 1960s Japan. He has taught courses in Japanese language, literature and civilization, as well as a freshman E&D course on travel and travel writing. His current course in JAPN 230 is titled “Post Bubble Blues: Making Sense of Contemporary Japan,” an examination of the cultural responses to the 90s and 00s economic and social disruptions in Japanese society. His recent publications include articles in positions, Mosaic, The Journal of Japanese Studies, and a book chapter exploring the case of Yokoi Shoichi, the WWII straggler discovered on Guam in 1972. He is currently working on an article about Tokyo in the years before the 1964 Olympics, and on a book manuscript about the 1960s in Japan.

A native of Japan, Ms. Kurogi has over 19 years experience teaching Japanese at different levels. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree from the Notre Dame Seishi University in Okayama, Japan, majoring in English Literature and English Language Education, and her Masters degree in Intercultural Communication from Portland State University. Ms. Kurogi received her Ed.D. in 1998 from Portland State University with emphasis on Japanese language pedagogy, Japanese culture education and foreign language education.

Satomi has a BA in English from Kansai Gaidai University in Osaka, Japan. She is currently pursuing an MA in Japanese at Portland State University. Satomi has taught different levels of Japanese at Lewis & Clark College and at Portland State University.

Yoshie comes from Okayama, Japan. She obtained her B.A. in English Education and Teaching Japanese as a Second Language from Kansai Gaidai University in 2010.
Yoshie likes travelling and is very excited about her opportunity to teach her native Japanese and Japanese culture.
