Marjorie Carlsen Chandler BS ’51, July 13, 2020, age 92. Chandler taught in a Portland elementary school for several years. In 1953, she married Robert Sederstrom, and in 1960 they moved to Salem, Oregon. In the following years, the couple built three houses and enjoyed skiing and camping in the surrounding nature areas. Robert passed away in 1979. In 1988, Chandler relocated to Lake Oswego, where she met and married Bob Chandler. The couple moved to Bend, Oregon, where Marjorie was an active member of her community. After graduating from Lewis & Clark, Barnard earned a master’s degree in retailing at New York University and then joined the Navy’s military security group in Hawaii. After serving in the military, he received a master’s degree in counseling/guidance from Oregon State University. Barnard worked as a vocational counselor and teacher at Cleveland High School in Portland and later served as a high school principal in Vernonia, Oregon City, Rogue River, Eagle Point, and Warrenton. He enjoyed boxing (which he took up while at Lewis & Clark), as well as fishing, woodworking, reading, and spending time with his grandkids. In 1957, they moved to The Dalles, Oregon, where Manfull worked as manager of Mayflower Milk. Later, in 1962, he purchased and ran the Ranch Restaurant in Hood River, Oregon, where the family moved in 1964. In 1966, he opened Tom’s Drive In, and ran both restaurants for years until retiring and selling in 1984. David L. Thayer BS ʼ52, April 2, 2020, age 90. Thayer spent 42 years designing and advising on lighting for hundreds of productions at the University of Iowa. His work enhanced performances of theatre, opera, and dance and was seen in world premieres of more than 20 plays, 100 dances, and 150 other productions. Thayer was also instrumental in the founding of the U.S. Institute for Theatre Technology. His career and writing had a tremendous influence on the technology and art of theatre lighting design.

Mary Hooper Drabkin BA ʼ53, October 25, 2020, age 89. After graduation, Drabkin moved to New York City, where she met and later married Murray Drabkin. From New York, the couple moved to Washington, D.C., where Mary worked as a licensed tour guide, leading trips to Africa, Europe, and Asia. Eventually, she and her husband moved to Trappe, Maryland, where they restored an 18th-century farmhouse. After many years on the East Coast, Mary lived the last six years of her life in her native Portland. To honor Mary’s passing and her love of poetry and literature, her family is establishing an endowed scholarship at Lewis & Clark, named after Mary and her late husband. The Mary Hooper Drabkin ’53 and Murray Drabkin Scholarship will provide support to worthy students who share Mary’s love for poetry and literature.

Helen Hendry Huff BA ’57, December 2, 2020, age 86. After graduating from Lewis & Clark, Huff, with the help of a Fulbright Scholarship, embarked on a journey to Austria, where she spent several years working and studying drama and set design. In 1959, upon returning to the United States, she met Richard, and the two were soon married. Huff was a fighter for adult education, earning several master’s degrees in the field. She worked in programs to advance adult literacy and vocational education as well as to improve accessibility to education for the homeless or otherwise underserved. Survivors include children Teresa and Dorothea; grandchildren Rosamund, Aubrey, and Antonia; and many other family members and friends.

Charles E. Kraft BA ’57, June 12, 2019, age 83. After graduating from Lewis & Clark, Kraft served in the Navy. In 1964, he earned a master’s degree from the University of Oregon. Kraft taught history at Portland Community College for nearly 30 years, retiring in 1994. He loved to travel, and his favorite destinations included Great Britain, Germany, Greece, Italy, and Mexico. Survivors include his siblings, Lenanne and Gerry; his son, Kevin; and two grandchildren.

Jerry B. McClelland BS ’57, January 17, 2019, age 83. McClelland was a professional musician and music teacher who loved his work. He also enjoyed golfing, fishing, and gardening. McClelland was a generous volunteer in his church, Lake Grove Presbyterian, and a loyal attendee of any event in which his grandchildren were involved. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Nancy; children, Beth, Bruce, and Bonnie; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Joseph W. Pashak BS ’57, December 14, 2019, age 90. Pashak was a food inspector with the U.S. Department of Agriculture until his retirement in 1989. An avid traveler, he visited every state in the U.S. and more than 50 countries. His hobbies included woodworking, gardening, and camping. He was also an active volunteer and served as president of the PTA at Kennedy Elementary School in Salem, Oregon. Survivors include his wife of more than 60 years, Anita; his children, Jeffrey, Kimberly, and Gregory; and six grandchildren.

Howard Purvis BA ’57, May 23, 2022, age 86. Purvis taught at Pacific Lutheran University before pursuing a doctorate at the University of Oregon. He later received a Fulbright grant, which allowed him to teach in Berlin, Germany, before he returned to Oregon as a high school teacher. He retired in 1994. Purvis loved classic cars, camping, and spending time with his sons. Survivors include his children, Leland and Michael; a grandchild; and many other family members and friends.

Ronald C. Benfield BS ’58, March 18, 2019, age 83. In 1959, Benfield married LaRita Riggs, and the couple moved to Newport, Oregon. He worked as finance director for Central Lincoln People’s Utility District. Outside of work, Benfield was an active community member, serving on various committees and boards. In retirement, he and LaRita traveled in their RV and enjoyed fishing, camping, and hiking. In 2008, LaRita passed away. In 2014, Benfield and Valerie were married. Survivors include his wife, Valerie; children Kathryn and Daniel; three grandchildren; and other loving family members and friends.

Chuck Charnquist BS ’58, October 28, 2021, age 89. Charnquist was an active, much-respected member of the Lewis & Clark community for many years. He served the college as its public information director for nearly 20 years. Later, he became an active supporter of the Albany Society and a member of the Board of Alumni, serving as chair in 2011. Charnquist also played a pivotal role in public relations for the Portland Trail Blazers basketball team. In 2015, he was the recipient of the Don Balmer Citation for outstanding volunteer service to the college. He is survived by many loving family members and friends.

Bob Gladson BS ’58, July 27, 2020, age 88. For more than 20 years, Gladson worked as a history teacher at Covington Junior High School in Vancouver, Washington. In his retirement, he enjoyed traveling, camping, and reading. Survivors include his children, Denise, Leland, Nell, and Lynn, and two grandchildren.

Norma McKinney CAS ’58, May 31, 2021, age 85. McKinney married Tom in 1957. She lived in Pasadena, California, for a time before moving to England with three daughters in tow. Eventually, the family settled in New Hampshire, where McKinney enjoyed painting, quilting, and other creative activities between her responsibilities as a volunteer with the local beautification committee and her study of interior design. Survivors include her husband; children Cindy, Amy, and Jennifer; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Daryle Steffen BS ’58, August 2, 2018, age 81. After graduation, Steffen served in the army for two years. Upon returning to civilian life, he married Peggy Kestie. Steffen worked as a social worker and was an active member of his church. He also loved tending to his garden. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Peggy; children David, Peter, and Philip; and seven grandchildren.

Wesley C. Strahm BS ’58, June 18, 2019, age 83. In 1963, Strahm cofounded Weatherly’s, a wholesale building supply business, which he helped run until retiring in 1995. During retirement, Strahm enjoyed spending time at his Black Butte home with family and friends; playing golf; and traveling. Survivors include his wife, Sharon; his son, Doug; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He worked in health administration for many years, eventually transitioning to health care legislation reform. Mel Knight BM ’59, MM ’65, August 24, 2021, age 86. Knight worked as a band teacher at several Oregon schools. He also arranged jazz ensembles and sang barbershop quartet. By 1981, Knight had transitioned to directing choral music, with his chorus in Eugene, Oregon, placing internationally. He retired from his position of director of music education in 1993. Survivors include his children, Erin, Tracy, and Cory; four grandchildren; and a brother.

Mary Zoe Petersen BS ’59, February 23, 2019, age 81. Petersen was a community organizer, volunteer, and owner of Gresham Optical/Custom Eyes for 30 years. She married Larry Petersen in 1960. The family moved to Seattle for a short while before returning to Gresham, Oregon, in 1975, where she was an involved and recognized member of her community. Survivors include her husband of 58 years; children, Eric and Zoe Ann; three grandchildren; and many other loving family members and friends.

Earl R. Rogness BS ’59, May 8, 2019, age 81. Rogness was successfully self-employed in the insurance industry. Outside of work, he enjoyed training his dogs for field trials, golfing, and fishing. After retiring in 1995, he lived in Neakhanie, Oregon. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Mary; his daughters, Anne and Emily; and one grandson.

Lynn F. Roumagoux BS ’59, MAT ’69, June 12, 2018, age 81. Roumagoux worked as a high school English teacher, counselor, and track and field coach in Portland and Anchorage, Alaska. A dedicated runner, he mentored many young men and women over his career, inviting the teams to his home for a spaghetti dinner at the end of each season. He met his wife, Donna Russell Roumagoux ’61, at Lewis & Clark, and they were married in 1959. After retiring, the couple learned to square and round dance, eventually teaching the dances together at various festivals around the United States until 1998, when they settled in Mesa, Arizona. Survivors include his wife; children Annette and Brent; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
